IN THE BEEGINNING
Toronto Honey began over 12 years ago by Fred Davis of Fred D’s Bees. Fred is a local urban beekeeper who has been keeping bees in the Greater Toronto Area since 2004. Originally from Saint John, Fred became fascinated with honeybees in high school.
When Fred realized how many honeybee and honey lovers were interested in supporting the urban honeybee population and local, raw, unpasteurized, unfiltered and pesticide free honey Fred created Canada’s first Hive Share program. The Hive Share program has grown a lot since then and Fred continues to share his excitement and his experience in urban beekeeping with friends, clients of Toronto Honey's Hive Share and with his students.
Fred has been a member of the Ontario Beekeeper's Association since he began beekeeping. All of Toronto Honey's hives are registered with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and Toronto Honey uses low impact treatments and good integrated pest management techniques to keep the bees healthy.
Toronto Honey won first place for amber honey at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.
how THE HIVE SHARE works
Anyone can join the Hive Share. Each year members new and old are invited to select a share in a hive (or two). Then, when the honey is ready it is harvested and your share is delivered to your door in the GTA. We even ship our honey to clients as far as Vancouver and Calgary. There's a lot more that happens throughout the beekeeping season, so you will also receive email updates on how well the honeybees are doing, new developments and the goings on in the bee yards.
